How to solve the problems of stopping and inaccurate timekeeping in mechanical watches

A mechanical watch is a delicate craft, operating without any internal combustion engine, relying entirely on the rotation of the gear train and the power provided by the mainspring. It requires continuous, uniform rotation for 24 hours a day. Even such delicate crafts can have many problems, such as stopping and inaccurate timekeeping. To solve this, we must first understand why it is inaccurate.

First case: Insufficient power reserve

Manual mechanical watches require daily winding to ensure timekeeping; without winding, the watch will stop. Automatic mechanical watches need to be worn frequently; if not worn for a day or longer, they will stop. It's important to know that a mechanical watch has the best accuracy when the mainspring is fully wound. To ensure accurate timekeeping, make sure the mainspring is fully wound. This is especially important for automatic watches, as the tension of the mainspring is directly related to wearing time and movement.

Second case: Magnetization

Watches contain a component called a hairspring, which is extremely susceptible to magnetic fields. When a watch is near a magnet, the hairspring will be magnetized. A magnetized hairspring will stick together, affecting the accuracy of the timekeeping. If the hairspring is magnetized, it's necessary to have a watchmaker demagnetize it using a demagnetizing tool for the watch to function normally again.

Third case: External factors

Mechanical watches are very delicate instruments. Impacts can damage the gear train, mainspring, or other components, affecting timekeeping.

Fourth case: It may need servicing

Under normal circumstances, in addition to daily maintenance, the watch should be returned for servicing approximately every 3 years. If maintenance is not performed for a long time, the watch oil will dry out, increasing wear on the movement and affecting timekeeping.

Everyone's wearing habits are different, resulting in different performance for each watch. Just like cars, some cars run for years without problems, while others may leak oil before even leaving the store. Therefore, if problems occur, return to the after-sales service center for timely inspection to maintain the watch in optimal condition. Avoid exposing the watch to strong magnetic fields; maintain a distance of at least one meter. Do not place the watch near televisions, computers, radios, mobile phones, automatic mahjong tables, refrigerators, washing machines, speakers, car doors, or bags with magnetic clasps.
