Watch Speedometer

A tachymeter watch has a bezel marked with decreasing numbers such as 500/400/350, representing speed in kilometers per hour. This bezel is called a tachymeter.

How to use a tachymeter watch:

For example, let's consider a vehicle traveling on a highway with distance markers. Start the stopwatch when passing the starting point. When the vehicle travels 1 kilometer, stop the stopwatch. The number indicated by the stopwatch hand is the average speed of the preceding kilometer.

For instance, if 60 is at the 12 o'clock position, and 1 kilometer is covered in one minute, then the speed is 60 kilometers per hour.

How are the numbers on the bezel calculated? It's simple. To determine the position of the number 500, we perform a simple calculation: determine the time it takes to travel 1 kilometer at a speed of 500 kilometers per hour, in seconds.

1 hour = 3600 seconds. At 500 kilometers per hour, it takes 3600 seconds to travel 500 kilometers. Therefore, to travel 1 kilometer takes 3600/500 = 7.2 seconds. So, 500 should be marked at the 7.2-second position on the dial. Similarly, 400 should be at 3600/400 = 9 seconds, and 100 at 36 seconds.

When the speed is below 60 kilometers per hour, the tachymeter cannot be directly used unless additional graduations for lower speeds are added.
